MEMORANDUM
TO: Ron Long, Assembly President
Members, Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly
THRU: John Williams, Mayor
FROM: Max Best, Planning Director
DATE: June 1, 2006
SUBJECT: Ordinance 2006-28 an ordinance to extend the termination date of Ordinance
2000-50
This amendment proposes to extend the term of Ordinance 2000-50 to allow for the emergency
harvest of spruce bark beetle killed timber. Ordinance 2000-50 was originally set to terminate
on July 1, 2003. On June 17, 2003, the assembly passed Ordinance 2003-21 that extended the
termination date of Ordinance 2000-50 until July 1, 2006. This proposed ordinance would
extend the termination date of Ordinance 2000-50 until July 1, 2009.
The extension of the termination date of Ordinance 2000-50 will allow the borough to
expeditiously harvest spruce bark beetle killed timber on borough lands, as identified in
Ordinance 2000-50 and Ordinance 2003-21, should a new wood fiber market return to the Kenai
Peninsula.
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on June 12, 2006, concerning this proposed
ordinance.
Shortened hearing is requested in order that this ordinance can be considered before the repeal date of Ordinance 2000-50.
