Mitigation vs. Emergency Response. Emergency response typically involves
well-practiced, coordinated efforts to save lives and property following
a disaster. Hazard mitigation is intended to reduce community and
individual vulnerability to, as well as the economic and emotional costs
of, hazards before they occur. Ideally, communities have both types
of plans in place. |
| Background. The KPB has
worked with Peninsula cities to develop the final draft of a multi-jurisdictional mitigation plan. |
| The
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made funding available
to examine pre-disaster hazard mitigation in the United States.
Alaska engaged in this effort at the city, borough and state-wide
levels. Information gathered from the incorporated cities within
borough boundaries has been incorporated into the KPB and the
State of Alaska mitigation strategies. The plan will be evaluated
and updated every five years or within one year of a disaster
event that significantly affects the KPB community. |
